Giving Physicians Actionable Information in the Medical Home
In 2011, CareFirst launched a ground-breaking PCMH program that rewards their PCP’s for lowering the total medical spend by actively managing the patients within their panel. Providers receive incentives for participating in the program, as well as creating and maintaining care plans and meeting cost and quality objectives. In developing their program, CareFirst identified several key domains: Structure, Access, Effectiveness of Care, Appropriate Use of Services and PCP Engagement.

About our Speakers
Brian Silverstein, M.D. is senior vice president Patent-Centered Medical Homes at CareFirst, BlueCross Blue Shield, in Baltimore, MD. He has almost 20 years of experience in the health care industry with extensive expertise in the areas of national healthcare trends, changing clinical practices, future care delivery models, medical technology innovation and adoption, and alignment of hospital and physician interests.
A highly respected industry thought leader and national keynote speaker; Dr. Silverstein has provided advisory services for a variety of providers - from small, rural community hospitals to large non-profit hospital systems as well as physician groups. In addition, he has consulted for various academic medical centers, integrated delivery networks, pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
Prior to joining CareFirst, Dr. Silverstein served as senior vice president at the Camden Group where he was in charge of the Chicago office. Before joining the Camden group, Silverstein was vice president and national thought leader for Sg2 Health Care Intelligence.
Dr. Silverstein holds appointments as a faculty member for ACHE, ACPE, The Governance Institute and is an advisor for the Medical Leadership Institute. In addition, he frequently presents for National organizations such as, Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Society of Critical Care Management (SCCM), College of American Pathologists (CAP), DARPA, Healthcare Strategy Institute, Bio, VHA, and numerous hospitals, health systems, and physician groups.
Dr. Silverstein received his M.D. from the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine. He completed his internship in internal medicine with McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. His undergraduate bachelor of business administration degree as valedictorian with highest distinction came from the Goizueta School of Business at Emory University, where he also completed a second major in biology, summa cum laude.
Andy Fitzsimmons – Vice President, Informatics: Andy Fitzsimmons has been with CareFirst for over 20 years. He is currently responsible for developing and maintaining data infrastructures to enable operational and analytical reporting for all of CareFirst’s business segments. Prior to this, Andy was Vice President of Financial Planning and Data Management and has held several positions within the Finance Division including Pricing Actuarial Valuation accountabilities for analysis and monitoring. Andy completed his undergraduate degree from The University of Connecticut and he is an Associate in the Society of Actuaries (ASA).
